Named is one of the most important processes within your cPanel server; it accounts for all the DNS (Domain Name System) resolutions that happen. Basically, it concerts words such as siteserving.com into an IP address, and then back again. If this service is disabled, or is offline, your websites will also be offline on your cPanel VPS server. For this very reason, it’s important to ensure that this service is never turned off, and if it is, to enable it again as quickly as possible within your cPanel VPS server. Please learn how to do this using the step-by-step process below:
- Login to WHM on your cPanel VPS server (The information needed is in your welcome email)
- On the left side menu, find "Service Configuration” and click on the "Service Manager” link.
- Find the checkboxes (there should be two) for named or BIND.
- Select the checkboxes, and then scroll to the bottom of the page and hit save.
- Scroll to the bottom of the left hand menu and find the Restart Services header.
- Select DNS Server (BIND) and then hit "YES” to restart BIND.
Please note, if you wish to disable this feature for any reason, you may do so on your cPanel VPS by doing the inverse of what was just specified above. However, please take into account that we strongly do not advise that named or bind is disabled on your cPanel VPS server for any reason. If you are in doubt, please get in contact with our cPanel administrators and they will be glad to assist you further.
I really like the cPanel DNS cluster function. You have a cheap and redundant DNS server after you finish with configuration. Takes only 30 minutes.
